Port Washington is a city in and the county seat of Ozaukee County and it is the 58th most populous community in state of Wisconsin. The site that would become Port Washington was originally inhabited by the Sauk tribe, and later the French in the seventeenth century. The first settler to the site that would become Port Washington was named General Wooster Harrison, in 1835., and he called the city Wisconsin City. It Harrison also who changed the name to Washington, but later became Sauk Washington and finally to Port Washington. The city was named in honor of George Washington, or rather the natural port was named after George Washington, and the city named after the port. Port Washington is about 20 mi 125 miles north of Milwaukee and about 100 miles north of Chicago.
Historically the Port Washington economy has been devoted to charter fishing fleets on the Great Lakes. Later shoe manufacturer Allen Edmonds opened a facility here, as later did lawn and garden equipment producer Simplicity Manufacturing Company, both of which were founded here. Simplicity was bought by Briggs & Stratton in 2004.
