West Bend is a city in and the county seat of Washington County, and it is the 24th most populous community in the state of Wisconsin. West Bend was founded along the route of the new road that connected Fond du Lac and Milwaukee in 1845, exactly at the midway point, a route that is now US Route 45. The site was originally just a rest stop, but soon a community set itself up and the rest is history as they say. The Milwaukee River is an intrinsic part of the town's identity, not the least because the town's location in the western bend of the river gave it its name. The river runs directly through town, and among other things provide a substantial amount of the town's energy.
The economy of West Bend has historically been based on manufacturing and financial services. West Bend Mutual Insurance Company was founded in 1894 and the West Bend City Savings Bank, in 1926. Later came the West Bend Aluminum Company which remained until 2003, and Amity Leather in downtown which would in time become the world's largest manufacturer of leather billfold. The economy was strong in the first half of the 20th century that Ripley's Believe It or Not claimed that West Bend was the only city in the United States that did not experience the Great Depression.
