Flower Mound in an incorporated town in Denton and Tarrant Counties, and is the 50th most populous city in the State of Texas. It gets its rather unusual name from a 12 acre mound in the center of town. Flower Mound got its start as a Presbyterian religious camp in the 1840s. Over time the religious folk built a church and a community flourished around it. Rapid growth truly arrived with Dallas Fort Worth Airport four miles from town, and from 1980 to 2000 the population went from about 4500 to more than 50,000. Today Flower Mound is the largest town population wise, though certainly not the largest city.
Flower Mound is one of the most agreeable communities in the north Texas area, in large part because the city is located on the north shore of Lake Grapevine, an area with great views that has been protected from rapid development. The city is also near Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, which makes Flower Mound an ideal place for manufacturing and distribution. Town officials have worked hard to make sure a balance is kept between development and economic need. There was a desire by some to open the gates to developers in the 1990s, but sensible heads prevailed and Flower Mound has been all the better for it.
