Kalispell, Montana with its modest population of 21,000 and its Micropolitan Statistical Area of 95,000 belies the economic vitality of this part of the state. It got its start by a businessman named Charles Edward Conrad who used his own capitol to form the Kalispell Town Site Company with several partners, in 1891. They platted the area and started selling lots, with a $100,000 being bought up on the first day by the Northwest Land Company of Minnesota, a company hoping to cash in on the prospective railroad that was to be built through the area. The railroad division point in Kalispell would be moved in 1904, but by that time Kalispell had established itself, and life went on. The city has continued to grow throughout the 20th century and picked up even more recently in the 1980s as surrounding communities were annexed. Since then Kalispell has become an important tourist destination, with Glacier National Park and Bid Mountain Ski Resort being among the biggest. The 1990s were even bigger, with the region achieving brand status with “western Montana” becoming “Western Montana. The city is especially popular with retirees, largely thanks to the ease of access to natural activities.
Kalispell is a secondary trade and employment center in northwestern Montana, with the biggest industries being education, manufacturing, tourism and Health Care. Commercial real estate development has been fairly heavy here and today Kalispell has more than three quarters of a million square feet of major retail space including restaurants and other related businesses, and there are even plans for the development of a new entertainment and retail complex. Major employers here include the Kalispell Regional Medical Center, Plum Creek Timber Company, TeleTech and Winter Sports, Inc. The economic development committee has been active as well, promoting the city and region with various programs. One important project, the Flathead Regional Business Center is currently promoting small businesses that and entrepreneurship under the auspices of the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce. The Kalispell economy sounds pretty robust, and there’s no reason you can’t make a great living there. At this point you may be wondering if there are a lot of other people who need a surety bond and what kinds of industries they're in. Are you a fundraiser? There are regulations that make sure that you are operating in good faith. Are you a fuel dealer? There are various transport and safety regulations which govern that industry. Do you own a business that fits hearing aids? There are regulations which govern how you bill insurance companies and the Medicare program. Break the rules in any of these industries and get a fine; it’s probably the same for your industry as well. However it’s not hard to understand that regulators would like to make sure they get paid, and so they ask you to take out a surety bond to cover them in case you cannot pay your fine.

Can you tell me how much a surety bond will cost? That’s not an easy question to answer because there are many factors that go into the decision including what the industry in question is, and what is the risk worthiness of the applicant. In general however license and permit bonds, which is a class a bond you’ll need if you need a bond for business license, will be between 1% than 3% of the total bond amount. Of course total bond amount can vary greatly from state to state, but if the bond requirement is, say, $25,000 then the yearly bond cost will be between $250 and $750. That’s not too bad for the amount of coverage and the type of coverage you get. Give us a call at 800-314-7003
