Local legend tells us that the area that would become San Marcos was accidentally discovered and subsequently named by Spanish colonialists who had been highway robbed by native Americans. After that came the German and Dutch immigrants in the 1880s but in 1887 the Santa FE railroad announced that it would lay tracks through the valley and in the city began to grow. The city was not incorporated until 1963 when grew rapidly after that by the 1980s was one of the fastest growing cities in California. The state's decision to build a campus in San Marcos was turning point in the city's development.
