The city of West Covina, California was incorporated in 1923 under not particularly auspicious circumstances. Its main reason for incorporating was to prevent the city of Covina proper from establishing a sewage processing facility in that area of town, so local citizens banded together and demanded a new city be created. West Covina was brought into being during a time of agricultural groves, which included walnut groves and orange groves. Population growth was slow in the 1930s climbing from about 750 residents to a little over 1500 residents in 1940. Between 1950 and 1960 however, population increased from 5000 to 50,000, and since then growth has been steady. These days West Covina has many of the amenities of any medium size city including the West Covina Sports Plex Project, the Westfield West Covina expansion which includes both cosmetic and structural renovation to the plaza west mall and the construction of the Fairfield inn and suites by Marriott, a five story 110 room hotel located on east Garvey avenue.
